Leigh Turben
Loves Oakwood!

Election Day is
Tuesday, November 4th!

I'm committed to preserving the Oakwood we treasure - its beauty, services, safety, and spirit - while guiding it into the future.

Preserve today. Prepare for tomorrow. That's my vision for Oakwood!

Meet Leigh Turben

Hi!  My name is Leigh Turben and I am currently a member of Oakwood City Council, and running for reelection.

Oakwood has been my home for more than 35 years. It’s where I have built my career and raised my family. I’ve enjoyed all the benefits of living here, and I love our traditions and strong sense of community. When you love something, you want to give back. I feel it’s important to not only support, but to serve the community we live in.

I have demonstrated my commitment to Oakwood while serving on several local boards including:

  • The Oakwood Historical Society, where I was a Board Member for 13 years, serving in every position, some twice, including President.

  • I was appointed to the Advisory Council at Wright Memorial Public Library, and the Consumer Advisory Board at Dorothy Lane Market, both for 3 years each.

  • Wanting to gain a deeper understanding of the structure and operations of the City, I applied for a position on the City’s Budget Review Committee, where I was a member for 5 years, prior to being elected. Here I gained valuable insights, and expanded my knowledge of the City significantly.

  • And, over the last 5 years, I have proudly served on Oakwood City Council.

While I have participated on several local boards, councils, and committees, I believe that serving on City Council has been the most meaningful way for me to give back to a community that I love. I’m ready and honored to continue serving for another term.

I’m a retired corporate banker of 33 years, with a Bachelor’s degree from Penn State University, as well as, an advanced certification in Treasury Management. My 3+ decades in banking have provided me a strong foundation to serve on City Council.

During my career in corporate banking, I managed several groups and departments including Treasury Management, and Public Funds. I consulted and advised companies of all sizes, from small businesses to Fortune 500 companies, as well as public entities including the City of Dayton and the City of Springfield. I led focused teams in both product development and sales to implement key operational changes for my business clients that led to streamlined internal processes, cash flow acceleration, improved financial reporting, and cost reduction. The skill set and knowledge I learned in banking has enabled me to understand and address the complex issues and finances of city government.

Committed to Oakwood's Future

Leadership Working for You!

During her time on City Council, she encouraged and supported several strategic decisions to improve the quality of life in Oakwood:

  • The construction of the 24/7 Recycling Center in 2021 has changed the way Oakwood recycles, resulting in in Oakwood recycling more per pound, per capita than any other city or township in Montgomery County.

  • We led the way with the counties first all-electric police car, improving our efficiency and sustainability.

  • For recreation, we resurfaced the 5 tennis courts at the OCC, added to 2 pickleball courts at Orchardy Park; as well we completed a major rebuild of the concrete deck at Gardner Pool, along with  adding a pool liner for enhanced beauty and safety.

  • We deployed in-car and body cameras for our public Safety Department providing real time documentation of encounters and events.

  • While not as exciting but definitely necessary, was the ongoing maintenance of our infrastructure including our sidewalk  and street repair, a major rebuild of our storm sewer system, and the repaving of Route 48.

My husband and I moved to Oakwood a number of years ago, a decision that yielded us so much joy and many great memories in our community. Recently, I’ve been disappointed to see so much division in Oakwood. Let us not forget that beyond the political preferences and social issues listed on the signs in our front yards, we are part of a whole community that wants the best for our families, friends, and the family living next door, requiring a need to listen to those around us, even if they express a different viewpoint than our own.

We must now, more than ever, seek leadership from those that are driven by the compassion and open mindedness that unite us, not the ideologies that divide. This sense of unity seems difficult, but is needed most in difficult times.

A council candidate that I believe can help us achieve our full potential is Leigh Turben. In a time when local leadership is more important than ever, Leigh stands out as a thoughtful, committed, and capable leader who understands the needs of our community. I have witnessed firsthand her dedication to public service and her ability to bring people together to address the overall needs of the whole. Leigh has deep roots in Oakwood. Our business district is finding a positive and bright path forward with Leigh as the City Council Business Liaison. She was a trusted advisor to our Wright Library, Oakwood Historical Society and Dorothy Lane Market. Leigh’s past experience in these roles demonstrates her commitment to better the places that unite us as a community with integrity, and her ability to foster true diversity of thought among her constituents.

Reader, the change we are all seeking starts within us- a warm greeting to the unknown neighbor, an open mind to an idea otherwise unexplored or disagreed upon, a sense of urgency to address our great divide. I ask my fellow residents to join me in supporting Leigh at the ballot box. Our city needs leadership that listens, leads, and delivers—and that’s exactly what Leigh offers.

Leigh's Vision

Shaping Oakwood's Future

I foster a vision for Oakwood that preserves our city’s sense of community. I want people to enjoy raising their families, as I did, in an environment where people care about one another, enjoy celebrating the milestones of life together, and work toward the common goal of raising the next generation to be informed, responsible, and involved citizens.

Citizen involvement is the cornerstone of our community. Today more than 100 Oakwood residents serve on city commissions, councils, and boards. This tradition of citizen involvement has defined our community in the past and it will lead us into the future. We need to maintain a culture where people feel their voice is heard, their beliefs are respected, and their involvement is welcomed.

As your council representative, no matter what your political views, I can promise you that my focus and priorities are not driven by political ideology. The question I ask myself with any decision is “what is in the best interest of the citizens of Oakwood?”.

Should you elect me to the City Council, this is my commitment.
